S.I.L.K.
was established in September 1996 after a
four week workshop on Gay Asian men held by the School of behavioral
Science, ( department of Psychology ) at Melbourne
University. The workshop were focused on Safe
sex, the lifestyles, and needs of gay Asian men. However, the participants
covered a wider range of topics which, it was believed, the community of
gay Asian men is facing in Australia. The key issues which were identified
included : family, coming out, relationships, self-esteem, cultural and
sexual identity.
After
the end of the workshops, participants expressed an interest to form a
gay Asian support network where we would have a "safe
environment" to meet, discuss and , support
each other.
In
November 1996 we adopted the name SILK
(
Support, Information,
Laughter and,
Kinship ).
We felt that the name was appropriate as it reflects our aims and objectives.
S.I.L.K. is a
community based organization which is committed
to the principles
of acceptance,
education, cooperation,
self development and
advocacy.
