Bella

I am just into these character creation things lately. I feel a short story coming on....

Bella dances when there is no music,
Spinning in her rainbow Docs,
Her shirt tied at her narrow waist.
Her hair stands on end,
Dyed the colours of the flag,
And she lets out a whoop.

"Happy birthday to me!"

She sure can work a room.
There's not a soul in sight
Immune to her charms.
She hasn't bought her own
Drinks in years.

I sit in a chair at the table in the corner,
Forgotten after the gift -
A gold necklace,
Tied around the pale neck
Being kissed by a redhead
On the dance floor.

Beatrice

This is the latest in a series of poems I'm doing. I'm curious to know what people think....

Beatrice came to my house
drunk on tequila from the bar.
Her breasts fell out of her tank top
when she climbed into the window.

She lay spread-legged on the bed
And blew smoke at my cat.
“Fuck them all!” she wailed,
her voice bouncing off the white walls.

The cat’s hair stood on end,
Her eyes wider than mine
As Beatrice arched her back
And kicked off her boots.

Wild as the color on her snake tattoo,
She sings using the pain in her gut
To hit the high notes.

Vegetable

On this slippery night
I slide back into time
And remember the loving arms
Of a movie star.

She wore red
As if the color were made for her,
And I stood by
In a nasty green.

She was a tree,
Standing proud and tall,
And I, a shrub
With unsightly leaves.

She was an apple,
Scarlett and sweet
And played the lead roll
To me, the sidekick.
A turnip.

Haiku #3

(I know haikus are hard to comment on but I'm on a kick lately.)

Breathe new life into
These shattered nerves and I will
Love you forever.

On the Rumpled Sheets of your Bed

This new series of poems are strictly experiments, which is why I thought I'd look for
some feedback....

I can hear your breathing,
your fingers in my hair.
I can hear my heart beating
against the walls of my chest
as my sanity returns in full force.

Stripped naked, with nothing
to disguise my pot belly and
my chicken legs, I am afraid
you will notice something ugly
about me you hadn’t seen before.

It almost breaks the moment.
You can feel this too. So you
kiss me quietly, like a silent
reminder of the times you drove
all night just to hug me.

Right then, at that very moment,
I have never loved you more
completely. Naked as a newborn
baby, you hold me like one and
every harsh word I’ve ever heard
slips away.

This is strictly a work in progress (hence the last-minute title) and I can't decide if I like
it or not so I thought I'd post it here in the hopes of getting some feedback....

I watched her from across the room.
Self assured.
Comfortable in her own skin.

No menstrual cramps or
Broken nights of crying
Into wads of Kleenex.

Her steps were sure.
Her firm frame hidden
In army gear.

A voice soft as angels
But packed with power.
"Could I have everyone over here please?"

That night, her hair falling loose
And her sex under my fingertips,
She was much more vulnerable.

Like a broken doll.
A war-torn friend.
I will not break you again.

Do You?

Last night she was dancing,
The moon on her face,
And she laughed and she cried
And she drank her life straight.
No chaser, no ice,
Just a smile on her face.
Do you want me, she said,
And I did.

The world crashed around her,
Or that's what she said
As she rolled her own cigarettes,
Prayed for the dead,
And fell in love with the voices
She heard in her head.
Do you need me, she said,
And I did.

The night descends
Like an unflinching weapon.
She swore, with her love,
That I'd surely reach Heaven.
I sat back with my drink
And admired the view.
Do you love me, she said,
And I did.

The demons adore her,
The gods hate her praise.
She measures her fate
By the strength of her days.
Do you want me, she said.
Do you need me, she said.
Do you love me, she said,
And I did.

Time's running out now.
I swear that she said
That was my love was free-flowing
But my body was dead,
As she slipped from my grasp
And she slipped from my head.
Do you love me, she said,

And from a distance I heard
The power of my body, and the
Strength of my words -
The most beautiful music that
I've ever heard.
Do you need me, she said,
And I don't.
