Etienne Fiori

The artist known as "Etienne"

1918-1984

Theatre Designer and Artist

"Le Printemps, Spring"

"Le Matin, Dawn"

"La Nuit, Night"

Artist Etienne Fiori was born in Paris to Italian, French parents. He worked in the depressed world of the vaudeville theatre after the first world war and finally got a chance designing costumes for a sexy revue in Montmarte.

His risque costumes for underground clubs and gay nightclubs began to attract the attention of the Paris elite and he was often considered for design jobs with the much more famous designer, Erte, with whom his style is often compared. They were firm friends in real life.

He mostly worked under just the name Etienne. During the war he spent time in Italy and Spain and after the liberation of Paris he returned to his life in the theatrical and gay underworld of Montmarte.

His designs are very much sought after as so many were lost and destroyed during the war. These are a few examples I've been able to find on the web. One I heard sold recently on Ebay for US$2200.00.

His later years were spent working for magazines in Europe and designing theatrical costumes and on his death was found to have been working on a massive, homo erotic, illustrated, fantasy novel "Sodomania".
