Same-Sex Marriages
Same-sex marriages are legal in several countries around the world. Thus, it perplexes me that there is so much controversy about same-sex marriages in the United States. The following are arguments for and against same-sex marriages that I have heard people use to bolster their opinion.
Arguments For Same-Sex Marriages
The
relationships of same-sex couples are just as caring, loving,
valid, and committed
as opposite-sex couples'
relationships.
Legalizing
same-sex marriages would allow same-sex couples to
have
the same responsibilities and benefits opposite-sex
couples take for granted.
Legalizing
same-sex marriages would strengthen the relationships of same-sex
couples,
thereby fostering commitment and monogamy.
The only
difference between a same-sex couple and an opposite-sex
couple
is the biological ability to create a child.
Arguments Against Same-Sex Marriages
Same-sex relationships are unnatural and immoral.
Same-sex relationships go against the teachings of the Bible.
Legalizing same-sex marriages would send a message that homosexuality is okay.
Same-sex marriages will destroy the fabric of our traditional society.
If same-sex marriages are legalized, more people will "choose" to be homosexual.
It seems to me that the
arguments against same-sex marriages fall into three
categories:
(1) arguments based on stereotypes and
ignorance; (2) arguments based on fear; and
(3)
arguments based on religious dogma. Although everyone is entitled
to their own opinions and views on things, these arguments are
not based on empirical information or logic. It is my hope that
the courts will share this view when they make their important
decisions regarding the legalization of same-sex marriages.
