Batavia Township
Organized as an independent township by the State
Legislature in the spring of 1836. The name came from the former residence of William
Reynolds in western New York State. The first township meeting and election were held
at the house of William Reynolds on April 4, 1836. Martin Olds served as Moderator,
Alpheus Reynolds as Chairman, and J.H. Stevens and Jabes Bronson as Clerks of
Election. These men, therefore, served as the township's first board of election. A bounty
of one dollar per wolf scalp taken in the township was approved, and Constables were
appointed as Fence Viewers.
