Butler Township
Set off and organized as an independent township by the Legislature,
act approved March 6, 1838. The township was set off from Girard, and at the time of
organization, it contained only 20 registered voters, the majority of whom were from
Butler, Wayne Co., New York. This fact apparently accounts for the choice of name.
The first township meeting and election were held at the house of David Lindsay on April
2, 1838. John T. Wisner and Jesse Bowen were named Judges of the election; Asa R.
Wisner, Clerk; and Tyler McWhorter, Assistant Clerk. Among first acts of the new
Township Board was the setting of a wolf bounty and the setting of a tax of 50 cents per
head for each child over four and under eighteen for establishment of proper schooling.
