Girard Township

By act of the Legislative Council of Michigan Territory, approved March 7, 1834, Girard Township was formed from Coldwater and Prairie River townships. It was the fourth township organized, and included the present Butler, Union, Sherwood, and Girard. The township obtained its present boundaries in 1838. The petitioners originally asked that the township be named "Fairfield," but this was already assigned. The Girard family, a famous (at that time) wealthy family of Philadelphia with heavy investments in Michigan was then suggested and adopted. The first township meeting and election were held at the school house, April 7, 1834, chose John Parkinson as Moderatory and Joseph C. Corbus as Clerk.
