Ovid Township

Organized as an independent township in the spring of 1837 by the Legislature. Most of the early records up until after the Civil War have been lost or simply thrown out with the trash. Some early settlers in the area were: J. Stockwell, who built the first school; James Hawks, Robert Haynes, Henry E. Barber, William Armstrong, Gardner Scofield, Stuart Davis, Martin Kinsley, George Chamberlain, and Roswell F. Davis. By 1871, the township had two churches; the First Free Baptist and the United Brethren. It was expected that the Mansfield, Coldwater, and Lake Michigan Railway would cross the township, but this line was never completed.
