Sherwood Township

When it was decided to organize the township, it was discovered that there were not enough qualified citizens to fill township offices. Therefore, it was decided to combine two townships until enough citizens were available for each township office; the two townships which shared officials were Sherwood and Union. It was agreed that an equal number of offices should be filled by each. However, Alexander E. Tomlinson, clerk of first township meeting, and Robert Waldron, one man was elected to represent the east half, who was about to move to the west half, thus the west half obtained a majority of the Board. It is recorded that Tomlinson and Waldron later had a falling out over this and gave each other bloody noses. This proves that our ancestors took their political duties very seriously indeed. All records of the township before 1855 appear to have been destroyed. The township was organized in 1836, but only a few of the official names remain. Note: The information about Tomlinson and Waldron does not make sense, but that it the way it was written.
