Baptists to the Rescue! In recent years, the Disney Corporation has made remarkable steps in showing support for the Gay community. Disney offers employee benefits to same sex couples and has even endorsed the annual Gay Day festivities at Disney World and Disney Land. This of course has made many conservative groups unhappy. When Ellen Degeneres came out of the closet on her prime-time sitcom, "Ellen", which aired on the Disney owned ABC Television Network, this was the end of all rational human behavior as far as the Baptist Church was concerned. So the Baptists organized a boycott. They put down their bibles and picked up picket signs and went to work. One small group of Baptist boycotters picketed a Disney retail store in a mall I frequent. They diligently gathered in front of the store every day for a number of weeks. The group wasn't loud or confrontational, in fact they were quite polite. They simply stood in front of the store with their signs as visible as possible, smiling at people who came and went from the store, and only talked to people who wanted to listen to them. Then one day after the protest had gone on for a while, the manager of the store next door came over to talk to the Baptist group. The manager asked the Baptists if they would come over to picket his store when they were finished at the Disney store. Perplexed, the Baptists asked him why. "Well," he told them, "The manager here at the Disney Store is a friend of mine, and she tells me that sales at her store have been up twenty percent since you all have been here." |
