A Business Journal editorial critical of the governmental redundancies caused by having so many separate municipalities in the Milwaukee area gave me the opportunity to draw this fanciful map, including an homage to the Milwaukee Journal's late cartoonist, R.A. Lewis. In one of Lewis' cartoons from the 1960's, he depicted the Grand Duchy of Granville marking off borders on a lot smaller than the average yard. This next cartoon dealt with what has become an embarrassing set of glitches with the Milwaukee Brewers' new Miller Stadium. While this particular problem has not come to pass, the much bally-hooed retractible dome did turn out to creak and leak, and badly. Continuing with the Milwaukee Brewers theme, this cartoon accompanied a Business Journal Serving Greater Milwaukee editorial about the Brewers' need to attract talent in spite of having less money to spend on salaries than big-city ball teams. The reference is to the Brewers' original mascot in the 1970's, Bernie Brewer, an anthropomorphized beer barrel. The Milwaukee Press Club gave this cartoon second prize for best editorial cartoon in 2004.
The Business Journal has been losing patience with the merger negotiations between the Wisconsin Center board and the Bradley Center board. This cartoon dates from 2004; a year later, I drew Ulice Payne and Frank Gimbel still poring over their chess board while a Bucks basketball game thundered around them.
I drew a few color cartoons for The Business Journal (and also for its periodical youth-oriented supplement, The Biz). This cartoon was drawn for a page 1 article about which Wisconsin interests were giving financial support to which candidates in the 2000 presidential race.
