A Francophonic Texan has advised me that the border sign in the cartoon at left should read "Bienvenue au Canada." Ah, zut. C'est ma faute. Je n'ai pas su que le Canada c'est masculin. You have to forgive me for being confused. Only the French would look at a word like "Canada" and decide that it's masculine. In any other romance language, ending in "a" would be a sure-fire sign that the word is feminine. Of course, the word "Mexico" ought to be masculine, but the French decide to call it "la Mexique" in order to make it feminine. Oh, well. We Americans should talk, eh? Who else would look at the words "United States" treat them as a singular noun? |
