| There's a 'candle'light vigil for Matthew on Sunday 18 October 1998 at 6:00 at the Pioneer Courthouse Square, in Portland (Oregon). If you want to come and hold something that bears light, they ask that you don't bring candles, but bring flashlights, lighters, and/or penlights instead. Senator Ron Wyden, Governor Vera Katz, Congressman Patrick
Kennedy of Massachusetts, Congresswoman Elizabeth Furse, and Congressman Earl Blumenauer are slated to be there. Let me reiterate: "Penlights, lighters allowed; but no candles."

| GLAAD's executive director Joan M. Garry will join Elizabeth Birch of the Human Rights Campaign, Kerry Lobel of the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force; celebrities Ellen DeGeneres, her mother Betty and partner actress Anne Heche; Emmy-winning actress Kristen Johnson (Third Rock From the Sun), and others to be announced. The event will take place at 7 p.m., Wednesday, October 14 on the West steps of the U.S. Capitol building.

| There is a National movement to hold vigils all over the country on Sunday October 18th at 5 or 6pm. This is being supported by HRC (and in Oregon by Basic Rights Oregon). Communities planning vigils should let HRC know for press/media purposes.

This horrific tragedy is all too a close a reminder of what gay,
lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people around the world face every day.
