Gina Does D.C.

Serendipity visits itself upon us when we least expect and you can imagine my doleful reaction when I was forced to go to Washington, D. C. on business the Friday before – now get this- HALLOWEEN 1999!! Tough duty but someone has to throw themselves down first on the barbed wire, right?

I landed on the Thursday night barely in time to get checked in and get en femme (leopard pattern blouse and black velvet skirt, bolero jacket and pumps) before dashing off to meet Kelly, Secretary of TGEA in DC, and a wonderful girl I met at SCC 1999 in Atlanta in September. We rendezvoused at Club Chaos near Du Pont Circle and got bad news/good news. The dining room was closed due to a water leak but it was Latin music night! Cumbias, salsa, meringue, real music and rhythm - not of this heavy bass b.s. or industrial sound all too common of rap or other forms of popular “music” which all seems to blend together in one unending stream of unartistic pablum. After we got settled in Kelly was gracious enough to indulge with me for a few numbers and then I cadged a couple more from an energetic latin who was moving to the same beat. We had dinner at Annie’s Steakhouse just down the street and when Kelly went home Ms. West Coast time zone went back for another 45 minutes of music and fun.

Friday was business, business until around 11 p.m. by which time I was dressed and ready to go meet two Vanity Club sisters, Terri and Frances, at Ziegfeld’s, D.C.’s leading drag performance bar. (I wore a black pleated short skirt with sleeveless top to match and my fuchsia jacket.)  It was my new digital camera’s maiden voyage and a good chance at that for the performers were beautiful and adept. One girl was a dead ringer for Whitney Houston and another did a super Diana Ross while a third  wowed’em as Stevie Nicks. Spent the night chatting with my companions, enjoying several libations and showing the girls what they looked like on the LCD on my camera seconds after I popped off a shot. (What a perfect invention for CDs and TVs - instant gratification of our narcissistic urges.)

Saturday was sheer heaven. Slept late and got dressed - brown slacks and shoes, blue sweater and top, scarf and gold accessories. Terri was “under the weather’ from the night before so off I went solo to Georgetown on the most gorgeous fall day -  bright, clear, comfortable temperature  and colorful foliage. After walking down M Street for a bit I stopped and had a wonderful lunch at Bistro Francais. Started with a glass of chilled Lillet then champagne with a salad and Eggs Benedict followed by espresso. Leisurely and restful pace made the meal extra special and took a pic of a Tattinger poster ad on the wall which any CD/TV can admire. Bought some gifts then walked down a watched the canal boat (circa 1840) navigate one of the hand-operated locks in Georgetown. Over to Washington Harbour along the Potomac, took some pics and then off to the Lincoln Memorial for more pics and the wonderful view down the Mall.

Back at the hotel I changed into my black leather mini, see through black sleeveless top and my new black leather jacket. I met Frances and Terri at a meeting of TGEA as Kelly’s guests and while the people were nice it was far too sedate for this girl, esp. on Halloween night. Still we took some nice pics, esp. of Terri as one and only Elvira. About 11:30 we set off for  to Ziegfeld’s which was packed to capacity. The highlight of the evening were two acts put on by a girl who specialized in very, very creative costumes tailored to the songs she sings - her outfits for “Black Widow” and "White Rabbit" were absolutely out of this world!
