Falwell: 'That Teletubby Is Gay!'

Famed Spiritual Leader Says Make Believe, Children's TV Character Actually A Gay Role Model

MINNEAPOLIS, Posted 5:46 a.m. February 10, 1999 -- The Rev. Jerry Falwell has "outed" a make-believe, costumed toddlers' TV character as being gay.

He's pointed his finger at Tinky Winky - one of the four main characters of the popular young children's show "Teletubbies" -- in this month's issue of the National Liberty Journal. That's a magazine edited and published by Falwell, reports The Associated Press.

The magazine's online edition runs the article in a section titled, PARENTS ALERT, PARENTS ALERT under the headline "Tinky Winky Comes Out Of The Closet."

Falwell suggests that the largest of the Teletubbies, which occasionally totes a purse on the show, is actually a gay role model. Why? The magazine says that while the character has the voice of a boy, he carries the purse. He also has an antenna shaped like a triangle, a gay-pride symbol, and is purple, a color associated with gay pride, asserts the magazine.

A spokesman for Itsy Bitsy Entertainment, which licenses the Teletubbies in the United States, told the AP that the purse is actually a "magic bag," adding that it doesn't make Tinky Winky gay. The spokesman also says that it is "kind of outlandish" to apply sexual innuendo to a children's show.
