Cairns has a population of 120,000 give or
take a few thousands of tourists at any one time.
Due to it's proximity to the Great Barrier reef and the other natural
attractions Cairns is very much a tourist orientated town. The associated
service industries supply the bulk of the employment in the town

This is looking out to sea from Cairns to
the South
I live over on the end of that Point which
is called False Cape
My house is about 40 Kms (you yanks can work
the miles out yourselves hehehehe) and i have to drive all the way around
Trinity inlet to work but the quiet rural setting more than makes up for
the inconvenience.
This is looking to the north of Cairns as
you can see we are surrounded but Mangrove Swamps which are a great hiding
place for one of our more feared local residents CROCODILLES!!
And yes when the tide goes out here it goes
WAY out.
Here is a pic of another way we like to separate the tourists from their money
This is our Casino
Cairns is an old town originally built as
a port to service the gold fields up on the Atherton Tablelands
In the rush for the mighty tourist dollar
most of the older buildings have been knocked down.
This is the Barrier Reef Hotel
one of the few remaining examples of Tropical Queensland Architecture
I am originally from Melbourne but came to Cairns via two years in Darwin
