Best Chinese Cuisine: Chrysanthemum, 1248 Washington Ave., South Beach (tel. 305/531-5656), has by far the beach's very finest Chinese food. The signature dish, chicken with crispy spinach, melts in your mouth while sparking a small flame. The Szechuan menu features lots of spicy favorites made of the very best quality ingredients. Best Wine Lists: The extensive and well-chosen wine list at Smith & Wollensky, at South Pointe Park, South Beach (tel. 305/673-2800), beats other Miami restaurants hands-down. The wine list at The Forge Restaurant (see above), a tome really, encompasses more than 3,000 vintages and 250,000 bottles from all over the world. Best People-Watching: Nowhere will you find better people to watch than at the Blue Door, at the Delano Hotel, 1685 Collins Ave., South Beach (tel. 305/674-6400). From any seat in the house, you'll have a full parade of hipsters in view. Best Ice Cream: Nothing's better than a cool cone in the middle of a hot day at the beach. Surprisingly, there aren't a lot of places making fresh ice cream. One notable exception is The Frieze at 947 Lincoln Rd., South Beach (tel. 305/538-2028). It offers mango, banana, guanabana, mamey, coconut, and anything else in season, plus all the usual chocolatey specialties. |

You can see works by Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Larry Rivers, Duane Michaels, and Claes Oldenberg. Guided tours are offered in English, Spanish, French, Creole, Portuguese, German, and Italian. An impressive screening facility allows for film presentations to complement the exhibitions. Holocaust MemorialThis heart-wrenching memorial is hard to miss and would be a shame to overlook. The powerful centerpiece is a bronze statue by Kenneth Treister that depicts thousands of victims crawling into an open hand to freedom. You can walk through an open hallway lined with photographs and the names of concentration camps and their victims. From the street, you'll see the outstretched arm, but do stop and tour the sculpture at ground level--what's hidden behind the beautiful stone facade is extremely moving. 1933 Meridian Ave., South Beach (at Dade Blvd.). Bass Museum of ArtAn important and growing visual arts museum in Miami Beach, Bass displays European paintings, sculptures, and tapestries from the Renaissance, baroque, rococo, and modern periods as part of their small permanent collection. Temporary exhibitions alternate between traveling shows and rotations of the Bass's stock, with themes ranging from 17th-century Dutch art to contemporary architecture. Built from coral rock in 1930, the Bass sits in the middle of more than a dozen tree-topped, landscaped acres. He's given this incredibly diverse and controversial collection to Florida International University. GROOVE JET. A great mix of gay and straight partyers, including some middle-age ones, converges at this SoBe hot spot. Usually, two DJs play simultaneously: a mesmerizing trance mix in the front dance floor, and more of a jungle/hip-hop style in the back room and the outdoor Crystal Lounge, whose walls are lined with pieces of broken mirror. On a Saturday night during high season you'll find 2,000-plus revelers in various stages of undress dancing wildly to the sounds of resident DJ Abel Aguilera, but holiday-weekend parties must be seen to be believed. A regular Saturday is better, with a more manageable crowd and space to roam on the massive, fantastically lighted dance floor.
