History: When the ancestral portrait of the Duc de Chantrey magically frowned, Rance Raleigh would be alerted into action. He adopted the uniform of the Duc de Chantrey and became The Cavalier in order to fight crime and injustice. His faithful employee Rocky assisted the Cavalier with his crime fighting exploits. It is not known if The Cavalier joined S.M.A.S.H. during or after WWII.

In 1969, an alien menace awoke from the interior of the moon’s surface and invaded Earth. The members of S.M.A.S.H. attempted to stop the intruder, but most were captured and placed in suspended animation. The Cavalier was one of the heroes imprisoned. After thirty years Tom Strange and his counterpart, Tom Strong freed the imprisoned science heroes. Together they stopped the threat of the alien. Difficulty adjusting to the new time period led to the disbanding of S.M.A.S.H. It has not been revealed how Raleigh coped during this time.

Three years later former members of S.M.A.S.H. were called upon to face another Earth crisis. After the threat was stopped S.M.A.S.H. reassembled and The Cavalier reappeared to join once again. He was last known to be in San Francisco investigating a strange time anomaly caused by the return of an unconscious Captain Future.

Powers: Raleigh has no super-human powers. He is, however, well versed in many types of hand-to-hand combat techniques and is a master swordsman.
