THE SCARAB
Real Name: Peter Ward History: Peter Ward is an archaeologist, who discovers he’s the reincarnation of an ancient Egyptian priest of the sun god Ra. Given a mystic scarab ring by the cat goddess Bast, Ward touches the ring and becomes The Scarab. The ring grants him great powers and Ward uses them to combat evil and injustice throughout WWII. He is accompanied on his many adventures by an intelligent cat named Akh-Tu-Men. It is not clear if Ward becomes a member of S.M.A.S.H. during or after the war. In 1969 an alien menace invaded Earth. Attempting to stop the alien, some members of S.M.A.S.H. were killed while others were imprisoned in suspended animation. The Scarab was one of those imprisoned. He was freed thirty years later by Tom Strange and his counterpart, Tom Strong. The Scarab, like the other science heroes, had to readjust to the current time period. The adjustment period took its toll on S.M.A.S.H. and the team disbanded. Three years later a new threat arose and the government called in former members of S.M.A.S.H. for help. Ward was one of them that answered the call. While heading to the nexus of energy field that made all technology useless, some of Ward’s teammates lost their powers. It was determined the expanding energy field affected science based heroes. With The Liberator and himself being magical based heroes, they proceeded on without the others. The threat was discovered to be the one-time hero Mystico. Mystico revealed himself to be an ancient pharaoh named Smenkhkare, the older brother of Tutankhamun, possessed by the Egyptian god, Seth. Ward allowed himself to be bonded to Seth’s brother, Thoth and helped S.M.A.S.H. stop Mystico’s god-like plans. A compromise was made between the U.S. government and Set. The Grand Canyon and fifty square miles around it now belonged to Set with his brother Thoth keeping an ever vigil eye on him. With the crisis averted The Scarab joined the newly reassembled S.M.A.S.H. Powers: Ward gains his mystical powers by a mystic scarab ring given to him by the cat goddess Bast. These powers include, but not limited to, super-strength, invulnerability, and flight. The Scarab has been known to conjure mystic fires, energy fields around objects and energy shields for defense. |
