THE TERROR
Real Name: Bob Benton History: A chance meeting at the drug store of pharmacist Bob Benton led to Benton meeting a boy named Tim Roland. Tim was giving a job at the drug store. Due to an accident caused by Tim, Bob was able to formulate a chemical he called “Formic Ethers”. Unknowingly breathing the vapors of this chemical led to Benton gaining various super-abilities. With these new powers Benton was now able to live out his dream of fighting crime and evil as the Black Terror. Tim, not long afterwards, breathed the vapors of the Formic Ethers too and gained the same powers as Bob. The two became known as the Terror Twins and fought evil throughout WWII. Jean Starr was The Black Terror's love interest. During this time The Black Terror became a member of S.M.A.S.H. In 1969 an alien menace invaded Earth. Attempting to stop the alien, some members of S.M.A.S.H. were killed while others were imprisoned in suspended animation. The Black Terror, now called The Terror, was one of the heroes killed while Tim was imprisoned above the Earth. Before he died the Terror’s last words were for Tom Strange to get help. Strange escaped and crossed the Milky Way for 30 years to reach his counterpart Tom Strong. Strange returned with Tom Strong and the two freed Tim and the other science heroes. Tim revealed to the other heroes that Benton was a polymath (a person who excels in multiple fields, particularly in both arts and sciences) and told Tim that if anything happened to him, Tim was to activate Program Omega. Finding Terror’s secret hideout the heroes learned that Benton transferred his personality into a computer program called The Terror 2000. With The Terror 2000, S.M.A.S.H. was able to stop the alien menace permanently. In 2004 The Terror 2000 program took on a darker agenda. During a time anomaly crisis caused by an unconscious Captain Future, the now updated Terror 2000 attempt to capture Future’s ship. The Terror 2000 believed it could use the ship to control time. It was speculated that the megalomanic program killed Tim and replaced Tim’s brain with it’s computerized one. In the end, a past version of Benton emerged out of time to destroy The Terror 2000 program. Powers: Benton was a genius on many levels. By breathing the vapors of the Formic Ethers, his body was augmented. His strength and reflexes had been enhanced to super-human levels. Benton was also skilled in many hand-to-hand combat methods. |
