FLOWERS
|
Flowers are my favorite subject... I have my yard landscaped in such a way that something is in bloom year round. That is one of the pleasures of living in an area that has such a mild climate.

Geranium Box ©1999 Randy Cahoon--13" x 19"
A mass of geraniums and a delicate, lacy purple flowered plant share this Williamsburg blue window box. The dark paned window in the rear frames these gorgeous summer flowers. Window boxes are my second favorite subject; outdoor umbrellas are my absolute favorite.

 Courtyard 2 ©1996 Randy Cahoon These two 14" x 18" tall paintings are two different sides of the same courtyard. The lighting just made each side look like a totally different place. I loved playing with the patina of the Mexican tiles.

 Variegated Dutch Iris ©1996 Randy Cahoon My first experiment painting on 300 lb. rough textured cold-press paper, and I am pleased to see it turned out well. I love Dutch Iris anyway, but the striped variety is especially beautiful. This 22" x 28" painting graces one of my bedroom walls.

 Poppies ©1996 Randy Cahoon--16" x 20" I wanted something bright and colorful for my living room wall. I was hoping to achieve something akin to the Georgia O'Keefe painting. I began to get the feeling I was getting the hang of creating greenery with this one.

 Bird House ©1996 Randy Cahoon--11" x 14" The source photograph for this painting was a gardening magazine cover. The rusted tin-roofed bird house appealed to me. I was experimenting with creating depth with foliage, and with masking fluid. The clover in the midsection of the painting gave me a large area to play with. As my watercolor instructor once pointed out, I enjoy vivid color.

Poinsettias ©1996 Randy Cahoon Inspired by a picture I saw during the holidays, I wanted to try to capture the beauty of the plant. Finished the last day of 1996, on 300 lb. rough texture paper, this painting is 22" x 28".

New Orleans Windowboxes ©1996 Randy Cahoon 13" x 16" A project from about mid-term of my watercolor painting class. The shutters and the petunias in the window boxes drew me to this subject. I was also experimenting with painting realistic window glass.

The Second Painting I sold!!! Orchid © 1996 Randy Cahoon I originally painted this for my parents' Christmas present, but changed my mind about giving it to them and kept it for my dining room. A client spotted it in a snapshot, and bought my painting on the spot.

The morning glories were fun to paint, and I used table salt to create the frosted glass pattern in the panes that make up the lantern. The leaves are actually ivy; the morning glories have grown up inside a trained vine. My instructor thought that this painting was one of my very best. I'm not sure I agree, but I do like the way it turned out. |
