Stonewalk ©2003 Randy Cahoon Completed in June 2003, this (24" x 30") painting marked a new phase of my work. The leaves in the foreground add depth to the landscape.

Shore Cactus ©1996 Randy Cahoon--11" x 14" One of the first paintings I did on my own after completing my watercolor training. This one was an experiment in texture; the cactus and grass have been scratched while wet to create a three-dimensional look.

Labor Day Sunrise ©1996 Randy Cahoon This was my first painting (11" x 14") in watercolor class. I went home disgusted, then spent about two hours adding red and orange to the background until I thought it looked more like the photograph I took at Atlantic Beach in 1983 on Labor Day at sunrise

Beach ©1996 Randy Cahoon--14" x 20" One of my first non-class related projects, and my first painting with no source photo. I needed a Summery looking painting for my living room, and liked the idea of a row of beach umbrellas.

Sky Meets Water ©1996 Randy Cahoon My absolute favorite of my paintings--11" x 14". I took the source photograph on Easter morning 1974. A heavy fog made the sky and water look like they were on fire.

Lighthouse-- Aerial view ©1996 Randy Cahoon--11" x 14" I love the way you can barely tell where the sky end and the ocean begins.

Roof Garden ©1996 Randy Cahoon--22" x 28" This painting is a sort of political statement. The source photo was a black and white 'before' in a penthouse remodeling article. I decided to dress up the bare rooftop with my fantasy garden. The skyline of New York City hovers in the misty distance. The tenament building on the left supports a massive billboard (not in the original photo), an advertisement for DeBeers diamonds--a luxury few of the building's tenants can likely afford. Remembering the part the famous South African family played in the horrific Apartheid government, I thought it would add a touch of irony to use their advertisement in this context.

Miami Style ©1997 Randy Cahoon This 22" x 28" painting depicts a front yard garden in Miami. I enjoyed working with the pastel colors in the umbrella, and working out the shadows created by the neighboring houses. The inviting pair of adirondack chairs look like a nice place for an afternoon cocktail.

StuccoGate ©1997 Randy Cahoon I painted this especially for Russell. The bricked courtyard is a bit off, but I did enjoy creating the weathered door and stucco gateway.

Lynn's House ©1996 Randy Cahoon A birthday gift to one of my best friends. I snapped a quick Polaroid one afternoon, and finished the painting that same night.

New Orleans Courtyard ©1996 Randy Cahoon--22" x 28" The umbrella, one of my favorite subjects, and folding canvas lounge chairs really appealed to me. The combination of Greek columns and weathered urns add a classical touch to the bricked courtyard, in contrast to the potted plants bordering the potting shed. The louvered door opens out into a second garden, the ivy peeking through the lattice hints at the greenery that lies on the other side.

Bricked Courtyard ©1999 Randy Cahoon--20" x 31" This gateway leading into a verdant garden was a total pleasure to paint. Completed in just under a week, I was most pleased with the restful tone of the painting. The lower portion of the photo you get when you click the icon above is a close-up of the center piece.
