1997Here my journey begins. My whole life, in one form or another, has been about becoming Real, whether about work, family, culture or religion. Now, for the first time the journey is also about me. I learn of who I am, who I have been and discover a world of others similar to me, transgenderism. I discover, express, embrace and love Paula. The journey begins with firsts: first time with an actual outfit; first wig (if you do not count a cub scout cheerleader skit I was in), first makeup. The wig was fresh out of the box. Later, another new wig, more makeup practice, even a few trips out of the "closet." I would find a couple of pictures I really liked and seemed to convey what I felt on the inside. Halloween consisted of a local organization's night before dinner and then I would go to Ember's with my friend Jane, a really big first for me. It was so much fun! At the time, these were some of the many important steps I would be making. 1998This year would be filled with much personal discovery and growth. I would gain greater self-acceptance, meet new friends through my involvement with a local trans organization, volunteer at a local AIDS organization and become involved with It's Time, Oregon!. Many small and big steps happened this year. Even from May to June there seems to be a growth, a change in the comfort I feel in who I am.
{View the pictures in this group.} My first big coming out was Portland's Pride Parade in June. Life would definitely not be the same
after that. More public excursions and friends. {View the pictures in this group.} Another fun and enjoyable year for a Halloween outing. These pictures were taken by my friend Terrance who
really got into the mood. {View the pictures in this group.}
1999Not a big picture year, I would make my first ever public speech at an Oregon Equality Begins at Home rally. Much of
this year would be focused on behind the scenes activity, the search for a new job and the beginning of what would be
a very stressful and antagonistic divorce and custody determination. Ouch.
