Clifford Tubkas was a simple musician
believing what his parents had before him before Joy entered his life.
His simple, yet hidden, lifestyle are hardly brought out, yet one can sense
a little tenderness behind the man. He is also a very talented musician writing
and performing his own songs with his band from the Musician's Guild. Although
a part of Gospoism, Joy's interference and his assistance in her escape
forced Peagan to excommunicate him from Gospoism. After the
official excommunication, He is discovered to be part of an underground movement
against Gospoism.
Joy Flautison was originally from Bluffs, but her family left after
the disappearance of her brother Scott. She returns to town to find
out what happened to him. She is strong-headed, independent, takes
orders from no one but herself, yet still has a soft spot for that special
someone. She infiltrates the Amehr church trying to find out about
what happened twelve years. ago asking its members questions they've never
asked themselves; and causes general havoc before being caught by Morris
Peagan.
Cliff and Joy knew each other long before our story ever starts.
They were the best of young friends before her father saw the evil of the
town with the disappearance of his son at the hands of Peagan, and
left for a better place. He fled fearing for his own safety and the
safety of his own remaining family. Their memories and feelings were
sparked upon meeting twelve years later, and the rest is history.
The Gospoist high priest is a man by the name of Morris Peagan. A
man who has become obsessed with keeping his fictitious religion intact.
So obsessed, in fact, that he can not see beyond the end of his nose and
will kill to keep it from being destroyed. Unfortunately, his close-mindedness
drove people away and untimately collapsed his religion from the inside out.
Martin Novac is the bounty hunter introduced in the second act hired
by Peagan for the sole purpose of capturing Joy and luring
Cliff. One thing about Martin, though: he's conceited. So
conceited, in fact, that to him, the world is full of losers, and he's the
only one worthy of...well...whatever it is that he believes he is worthy
of. One cannot predict the conceited.
Albert Davis was Peagan's partner in the creation of Gospoism
and Bluffs. A kind-hearted man from the start, he began to recognize
Peagan's hard heart. Threatening to go to higher authorities to protect
his faith from Peagan, he is killed. His martyrdom, however, was in
vain.
Some of the other characters:
Carol Smartz was the first reporter sent from the Weekly
Whattheheck. It was her disappearance that prompted Joy's arrival.
Julie and Dave are, respectively, Cliff and Joy's
original dates when they remet at the Cafe Bluffs. Poor Dave and
Julie located each other shortly thereafter and from what I hear,
are still seeing each other.
Cliff's band contains some of the best musicians the town of
Bluffs has to offer. Most of them can sing as well -- as evidenced by the
song Cliff and Joy dance to in the club scene, and the backups
provided in the two songs performed in the show.
Jerry and Spencer are Novac's goons. Novac, being
how he is, will not work with anyone who just might be as clever as he is,
so Jerry and Spencer are pretty much idiots. Combined with
Novac, we are dealing with the Three Stooges.
Troy Claviea is not only one of Cliff's musicians, but a fair
player in his own right. He does gigs with Cliff and some on
his own.
Following Peagan's death, Gospoism collapses. Since it had no roots,
the people had no one to turn to for guidance. They eventually pick up
traditional Christian beliefs due to mission work from a nearby town, and
Bluffs, as a whole, celebrated their first Christmas the year Peagan
dropped out of their lives.
