I started doing this diary in June. If you haven't been following have a look at the Cast of Characters which gives a quick
low down on the essential day to day characters who are mentioned here...it will make more sense if you do.
After a leisurely start (well it is the weekend) I set off for town with my laundry but got no further than the car before Lorna waylayed me to come and attatch Lauren's fairy wings to her. Lorna was busy creating the fairy dress out of the ubiquitous decorating sheet and glitter. She was sooned fitted up with the wings and I left to do Laundry, get in suplies for Sunday dinner and eat egg and chips at the New Bridge Cafe. That gave me the strength to go to the Llangybi school fete.
Lauren had arrived too late to participate in the fancy dress competition but she had been given a lollipop anyway and did not seem unduly bothered. I was more bothered than she was really. Not all the parents really like the idea of having fancy dress as a competetive event anyway. Many of the kids and their parents are cobbling together some sort of costume out of nothing at all, like we were yesterday. And of course, some of the costumes are crap, so those kids are at an immediate disadvantage. The shopkeeper in Llangybi wants to hold a fancy dress tea party... with the adults dressing up as well... and prizes for everybody. The rain was holding off a lot of the time and lots of outdoor activities were going on including stunt bikes, go carts, pony rides and, so I was told, a bouncy castle. Indoors the corridor was full of a brass band, tea and cakes in the staff room and lots of junk for sale in the assembly room. Inexplicably dull and sweet/lovely/touching at the same time. The childrens display of humanoid (sort of) forms sculpted from vegetables was particularly delightful, way beyond Mr. Potatohead.
I did eventually tear myself away and came home to do a bit of sorting around the house. I have about a week to get it into a fit state for my Mother to visit. First I lit the stove, I know it works but I need to make sure I have the right technique to keep it going just in case that is needed very soon as it might well be. I put up a pair of curtains today that have been sitting on the windowledge since we moved in. First I had to brush off clumps of flies enmeshed in spider webbing and then find appropriate curtain hooks for the type of rod... in my toolbox for some reason. The curtains are rather too long and drag along the floor, but my main concern is just how revolting they actually are. But... oh well, they're curtains and curtains are the kind of things Mothers like to see. I also scrubbed everything... I mean everything in the shower room/ toilet which Clare has long been going on at me to clean. I never really minded, it was the downstairs toilet, I've got a perfectly nice clean one upstairs but she did have a point. It hadn't been cleaned in any way in there for a very long time.
Since I had the fire going I did something I haven't done for ages which was to sit in an armchair with the Saturday Guardian and read all the job adverts. More and more jobs are appearing for web designers and developers etc. Still the majority of jobs are in-house jobs based in London which is just such nonsense. That took me up to dinner time since when I'm just sitting here fiddling, or taking a bath... normal evening stuff. I've printed out the Starr Report... whether I'm going to be bothered to read it is another thing.
