I started doing this diary in June. If you haven't been following have a look at the Cast of Characters which gives a quick
low down on the essential day to day characters who are mentioned here...it will make more sense if you do.
I did well today, I was up and had the fire lit, the horses fed and breakfast made before 10.00 am. No really, that is doing well. |
It was a lovely spring sort of a day outside. More and more daffodils are coming out now, even some wallflowers along the front of the garden have opened up today. It was the sort of day for wanting to do things outside. I visited the greenhouse where the first of the herb seeds we planted are starting to show their little heads, thyme and chamomile. It was warm in there, the soil in the seeds trays was almost hot to the touch. The dogs were outside as well, enjoying the morning and I threw sticks and balls for them and lay in the grass. I also swept out the barn, two barrowloads of bark and old hay and wood shavings and leaves and dust, I picked all the bits of baling twine out of it and delivered it up to the slow rot compost heap. I managed to get in the house long enough to phone Social Security and ask why they had sent me an Incapacity for Work form (to my old address) when I hadn't been claiming benefit for 10 months and, surprisingly, I understood what was going on after that phone call. |
When Lorna was up and about we went off down to Cwm farm to collect the other 10 bales of hay. We found Farmer Jean about to have a cup of tea with her friend from up the road and we were invited in for one as well. It was quite hilarious really. Even more hilarious was getting the hay out. First I had to back the trailer round several corners and I didn't really get it right where I wanted it and then we all waded through a herd of cows and slushy cow shit to the hay barn which was full of sheep. That was easy enough but coming back through the herd of cows carrying a bale of hay was less easy because they all wanted the hay and a cow yanking on something I've got over my shoulder is enough to pull me over so I dropped the bales several times then had to pick them up out of the midden so I went home stinking of cow shit. It was fun though. |
I had the urge for salad when we got home and made enough for everyone. Then I had a quiet half hour when everyone else went out until Lauren came home from school and we went into the organics shop so that I could stock up on fruit and vegetables. I found David here when we got back and went to see how he was doing at the caravan. He'd just about finished repairing the pipes but it turned out the washer in the tap was dodgy anyway so he'll have to come back tomorrow with a washer. We had a look into the field and stood and talked about building a pond and the various different ways of doing the drainage. Just as he was leaving Clare arrived to see the horses and we ended up taking Nelly out for a walk and Lorna and Clare both had a ride on her. Then Clare went up for a bath and I sorted out the shopping and had a lengthy call from Lisa and did the lunchtime dishes and mended the toilet which Clare had somehow broken and then it was dinnertime. I've had a bath now and got rid of the smell of cow shit, I'm sure you'll be pleased to hear that. |
