I started doing this diary in June. If you haven't been following have a look at the Cast of Characters which gives a quick
low down on the essential day to day characters who are mentioned here...it will make more sense if you do.
Lorna and Lauren left this morning so I had the place to myself for the day, just me and the animals. Lorna took Jade but Tigger is here as are the cats. After I got done with morning chores I wanted to choose an activity which involved being outside so that Tigger could get a good run around. It was cold but sunny and I actually did want to be outside. I went up the garden to see what might call me and it turned out to be the currant bushes. They said "Oh, look at us, we're half strangled with long grass and leaves and weeds and stuff, wouldn't you just love to clear away all this rubbish and give us a nice mulching with horse shit or hay?" and as it happened I did want to do that. First I found my old pair of one handed shears which were totally rusted and sharpened them up and brought them out with the wheelbarrow and pitchfork. What I hadn't taken into account was just how many bushes there were. I was also amazed at what I found growing at the base of these bushes, lots of self-seeded trees, including two baby oak trees. I didn't really want to pull them out, they're not ideally located but they won't be big enough to actually cause any problems for several years and I don't think this is the time to move them when the ground is half frozen. Getting the weeds out was easy enough although time consuming, getting the horse shit on was less easy, the mud presented a problem, even just a few inches of mud can impede the progress of a wheelbarrow full of horse shit quite considerably. I developed a technique for pushing it through the muddy patches which involved using my knee, but it did leave my knee bruised and eventually I got sensible and put a plank down. By the time the light was going I had the whole lot cleared and most of them mulched, I'll do the rest over the weekend and I might even go on and do the raspberry canes as well. Tigger had been outside for hours by then, as had the kitten and they were both glad to get back into the warm. |
As for me, I was glad to get into the warm as well, but it had a very soporific effect on me and before I knew it I'd fallen asleep in front of the fire. It was 6.30 pm when I woke up and I felt hungry and disorientated. I felt better after a sandwich and started to play about with the card I was making yesterday, now it has turned into an A3 Solstice poster. |
