For Those Who Think Dancing is Square

Remember (former?) Powder Puffs member Kathy Greer. She was the one with the "It's to die for" southern accent. Anyway, she was perhaps one of the first Powder Puffs member to take up square dancing. I know, UGH, Square Dancing - it reminds one of The Beverly Hillbillies. But square dancing within the Gay & Lesbian Community has gone 21st Century. No, not with Luke Skywalker-inspired steps, but with organization.

An umbrella-like organization, the International Association of Gay Square Dancing Clubs (IAGSDC) links together Gay & Lesbian Square Dancing Clubs from around the globe. The upside of all of this is that something exciting is going on all the time. The clubs have come up with the jet-age concept of a "Fly-in." A Club stages a 2-3 day party and invite other clubs to "fly-in". Hundreds of dancers show up. And if you are so lucky as to live in Southern California, you don't even have to step on a plane. The Southern California (as opposed to the Southern Cal) clubs sponsor some of the nations best. For example, coming up in December the Las Vegas (I know, Las Vegas is in Nevada) club is sponsoring a Fly-in, in February Tinseltown in Los Angeles takes a turn, and in April the Finest City Squares in San Diego sponsors a must-go-to dance. Every month a local club in the area is dancing.

However, the best reason to start now is that the thirteenth annual IAGSDC Convention will be in San Francisco, July 3-6, 1996. Over 1000 dancers will arrive. The 803-room Hyatt Regency at Embarcadero Center on spectacular San Francisco Bay will sellout for the event.

Many members of the gender community are already dancing including Gina Ann, and Arlene & Betsy of Born Free, Desiree, Lauren F., Lynda, Connie A, as well as myself. Interested?
