Keith Caputo is a superb musician. He is not only able to write songs that goes straight into your heart, he also has an amacing voice that really gives the songs the emotion and mood he wants them to have. I have always thought that Keith's way of singing was the groundstone in Life of Agony's music. Without the big voice of this little man Life of Agony just wouldn't be the same.
After a 10 year period with the 3 other guys in Life of Agony, Keith Caputo decided in 1998 to leave the band. There were many theories about why Keith decided to leave Life of Agony, but the exact reason I believe only Keith knows, though it seems to show that Keith and especially his music ambitions had developed in another direction than Life of Agonys. He seeked new artistic challenges in his music.
Keith started forming the band "Absolute Bloom" which was said to be consisting of friends from Keith's school days. Of uncertain reasons "Absolute Bloom" didn't exist for very long and Keith had to once again start a new band up from scratch. Keith first wanted to name his new band "Brandy Duval". Brandy Duval was his dearly beloved mother who died from an overdose of heroin when Keith was a child. Nevertheless Keith's recordcompany Roadrunner Records wouldn't accept this name as they meant that it sounded more like a "Latino Chic". Against his will Keith published his first solo album under another name - his own. The album which got the title "Died Laughing" contains some brilliant songs including the hitsingles "Selfish" and "New York City". See the full tracklist here.
After the publishing of the album Keith got busy touring and advertising his new solo project. I was supposed to have seen Keith perform unplugged at a small place in Copenhagen on february 22. last year, but unfortunately Keith had to cancel because of illness. It was a great disappointment because a couple of my friends and I had looked forward to meeting Keith under calm conditions where we would have the chance to shake his hand and tell him what big fans we are and perhaps drink a beer with him. Unfortunately we missed this great opportunity. On the other hand the happiness was great when we found out that Keith was playing at the Roskilde Festival later that year. This concert in the green tent at the opening day of the festival I still remember with joy.
It would be wrong of me to say that the tent was full, but those who attended got a music experience somewhat out of the ordinary. I know I did! Keith and his new band played all the tracks from the debut album except "Just Be". All the songs were performed with great skill by the band and Keith's vocal was as amazing and emotional as we remembered it from the Life of Agony concerts.
If you had to point out a highlight in this outstanding concert, it must be the ending. It was the climax for the audience that only knew Keith from his time in Life of Agony. As encore Keith chose to sit on the edge of the stage with his guitar and play a spectacular acoustic version of "Let's Pretend". At that time I had unfortunately already used all the pictures in my camera so I couldn't immortalize the moment allthough it had definitely deserved it. Nevertheless the memories of this concert lives deep in my mind.
It is still unknown if Keith Caputo is going to make a follow up to "Died Laughing". So far, I have only knowledge of that he has recorded a new version of Annie Lennox' song "Why". I think that Keith gives a splendid interpretation of his favorite female artist's old hit. The song "Why" is to be found in two versions on Keith's newest album "Pure" which contains acoustic versions of many of the songs from "Died Laughing". Additionally the song "Yesterday is an eternity", which Keith wrote in his time with "Absolute Bloom", also appears on "Pure". See the full tracklist for "Pure" here. Now we’re just hoping that this brilliant musician soon will have enough new songs to release his second album. We have great expectations! |
