Some potted history:
Birthplace
Born in Plaistow Maternity Hospital, in the East End of London, during the Blitz, to working class parents. Evacuated to Gateshead in 1944 once the V2 rockets started arriving. Back home in East Ham for the bonfires and street parties of VE day
Education
Surprised everyone by passing the 11+ examination and going to East Ham Grammar School for Boys. Studied French, Latin and Greek before specialising in science subjects for "A" level GCE.
Graduated in mathematics at Nottingham University (B.Sc.1961). Decided not to be a teacher during my PGCE training year at London University.
Career
Started work in theatre as Chief Electrician/ Lighting Designer at the Queens Theatre, Hornchurch. Worked with the Welsh Theatre Company, Dundee Repertory Theatre, Cambridge Arts Theatre, Manchester Library Theatre, R.N.C.M., Darlington Civic Theatre - progressing via technical management to theatre management. Took early retirement in 1993.
