We visited the Summer and Winter Palaces of the Dalai Lamas. No photography is permitted within the Potala and it is an almost empty shell. Visiting the Norbulinka is a sad and depressing experience. The gardens are overgrown and strewn with litter. As you enter the palace of the present Dalai Lama, attendants flick on fluorescent lighting and shrill Chinese music as you make your way past two glass counters full of souvenirs that line the entranceway to the palace.
