Holiday Album Caleta de Fuste - Gordon

So you wanna know about our holiday to...

Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura - the second largest of the Canary Islands. Situated about 80km from the coast of Africa. Yes, it's hot!!

The winters in England can be long, cold, wet and miserable. So we decided to have a little break basking in the sunshine of the Canary Islands. Our last few trips were to Tenerife, so we decided to try a different island.
On Saturday 7th March, 1998 we flew from Manchester, England to the island of Fuerteventura. We flew Airtours, so I suppose we were lucky that we were only delayed by 2 hours!! The flight itself took just over 4 hours. Apart from the delay, it was quite a pleasant flight. Even the in-flight meal was edible.
As it was a last-minute deal we didn't know where we were going to be staying until we arrived in Fuerteventura.

We were allocated a bungalow (B66) at Las Villas del Castillo in Caleta de Fuste. A short coach transfer from the airport.

The brochure describes Caleta de Fuste as "a modern up and coming resort stretching backward from the sea on the almost flat terrain. Its daytime activity focuses on a broad sweep of golden sand that lines the shallow waters of the bay. A comparatively small and friendly village, it has ample shops, cafe bars and restaurants. This must be one of the most relaxing spots in the Canaries. It's blissful for total relaxation, though those wanting nightlife should look elsewhere." Just what we were looking for.

Also known as El Castillo this is one of the most popular resorts with British visitors, and offers sheltered bathing from the man-made beach next to the small harbour.

Most of our days were spent lazing in the sunshine on the beach at Caleta de Fuste. The main beach is not nudist, but you only need to walk a few minutes south to find all the nudists. A large proportion of these were gay men (but not exclusively). So now you know where the big boys hang out! Just look for the stone 'nests' near the lookout bunker. One day we decided to go exploring using the public transport system. The buses were cheap, cheerful and remarkably reliable. We took a bus from Caleta de Fuste to Peurto Rosario (the island's capital), and from there caught another bus to the north of the island and the resort of Corralejo.

If we decide to go back to Fuerteventura - this is where we would choose to stay. There's a bit more nightlife, more restaurants, more to do, and of course there's the stunning beach just outside Corralejo.

Corralejo is situated at the top end of a National Park. It's amazing - mile after mile of stunning golden sand dunes. You really have to go there to see it. Best of all - it's practically all nudist. Nudism is widely accepted on the island. Now you can see why we liked it so much. We love being naked, especially in the hot sunshine of The Canaries. (A word of warning - the constant breeze can make you feel deceptively cool. Watch out for sun stroke!) This must be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Corallejo - Fuerteventura 3/98

Back in Caleta de Fuste, make sure you check out the Hotel El Mahay. (Now exclusively available through Airtours in the UK - thanks for the update Brendan!) Even if you're not staying there, make sure you go in to the restaurant for a meal. Good food at reasonable prices - extremely friendly and a nice atmosphere!! Highly recommended. Caleta de Fuste

All dressed up & nowhere to go
About the only thing that I found slightly annoying on this holiday was the wind (nothing to do with Spanish food). It was always blowing a gale. During the day it was lovely -it kept you reasonably cool in the heat of the tropical sun. At night you had to wrap up ie. wear a long sleeved shirt. Oh , the hardship of it all :-)

Then, on Saturday 14th March it was time for the journey back to England. We checked out of the bungalow at 11am. The coach to the airport was not picking us up till 4pm, so we had another 5 hours down the nudist beach to catch the last of the sun. Boys will be boys - especially in that heat!
