Staggering under the weight of handcuffs and chains, an elusive prisoner who escaped from a courtroom into bitterly cold weather last week was sentenced Friday to six years in prison.
"They don't want me to go jogging anymore," Sandra Head explained, rattling her many metal constraints not long after visiting state District Judge Allen Stilley pronounced sentence.
At least seven sets of handcuffs, body chains and ankle chains bound Head, 27, as she made her latest court appearance.
The extra hardware was necessary after Head wiggled her wrist out of only one set of cuffs Dec. 22 and dashed away with dozens of deputy sheriffs in pursuit.

On the coldest day of 1989, with ice on the ground and snow falling ,Head got only two blocks. She was waiting on a taxicab in front of the Harris County Administration Building when apprehended.
The night before, she had escaped from a Houston police unit after an arrest for hitchhiking. Prosecutor Brigitte Peters said a glass pipe containing crack was found by police in her belongings after that escape, which ended when Head was caught hiding in a near vacant house.
She pleaded guilty to possession of crack and escape from the courtroom.
"Truthfully, I'm glad I got caught," Head said smiling.
"Now, I can go on and serve my sentence and get it over with." |
