Great page... although I am looking at it in secret lest my parents discover me. "Eugenia Falleni" is a fascinating case of a woman in New Zealand who disguised herself as a man and married two women under this cover -- she managed to hide her identity fo almost 30 years!!! You might want to add her to the page, despite her tragic ending and the hateful court case she had to face. Check out the book "Stroppy Sheilas and Gutsy Girls" for more info... it's a New Zealand book by the way, so I hope it isn't t o hard to find. Best, Pooja Mittal.

In Response to Muriel and others: Not every individual who poses as a man does so to "cover for" a lesbian relationship. Some women posed as men in order to gain employment, which has been made difficult for women in the passed as they were only allowed to do certain jobs and they paid w men a lot less then men for the same work. Also there was the factor of freedom and safety. Men had plenty of freedom to travel and do things, women on the other hand were bound in so many many ways. It was against the law for a woman to wear pants and the dresses in those days sometimes weighed several pounds, were cumbersome and difficult to move in. Dr. Mary Walker considered them extremely unhealthy and impractical. That is why she fought for dress reform, but in doing so became a laughing stock, nd spectacle, which stunted her practice, in addition to the fact that people did not want to have a woman doctor. Dr. James Barry posed as a man for a great part of his life and was able to take on great responsibility and acheive high statis as a man. There was no shame in his actions. Even after the discovery was made after James' death his friends insisted on ca ling him "he". I think our society is to blame for homophobia and sexism yes, but the individuals that must hide in order to survive? No, I don't believe they are to blame for anything in this act of self preservation. transgendered
