requested I join the company as a Web Mistress. In the two years I have worked
there, I have been involved in a variety of roles including creating publishing
systems and maintaining systems across the company. I have been required to
investigate and advise other Program Managers on various technologies. These

Directly involved in WordRight achieving the
Best Sun Microsystems VAR in WA for two years running.
Involved in the pre-sale, sale, installation and support of UNIX intra and internets.
Directly installed two ISP systems including sale, configuration and postsale support.
This involved DNS, Firewalling, Email, Anonymous FTP as well as web serving.
Directly involved in the creation and maintenance of http://www.resnet.com.au
which is a web server (25,000 pages) dedicated to providing quality and timely
information to the resource industry. This involved Oracle, Ingres, SQL, C, C++,
Perl, Java, Javascript issues as well as direct connection to such wire
services such as AAP/Reuters.
Directly involved in the sale, support and installation of 50 Ascend P50s, 2 Ascend
1800s and 2 Ascend Max 4000s for a government department. This involved such
things as creating automated scripts to create and download configuration
profiles for these devices.
Solved a statewide communications issue for a government department which involved
performing hand decoding of protocol traces. The network has several
mainframes, high end Sun servers, dozens of routers and some 2,000 PCs.
Directly involved in the sale of a large amount of Sun Microsystems machines to a large
construction company and created the first version of a complete virtual
network spanning Australia and S.E. Asia. Also created the first version of a
full extranet to allow remote users to tunnel to the main server and create
quotes, modify accounting information and handle email, news, spreadsheets and
word processing within Microsoft Internet Explorer browser window. This
involved handling remote PC and server connections and the creation of an
extensive Oracle based Web service to provide all this functionality. (The
email and news services were not the IE extensions)
Created a 600 page book detailing all aspects of SunOS systems administration covering
such issues as Hardware, File Systems, System Directories, System Files, Kernel
Configuration, Startup and Shutdown, NFS, NIS, Network Commands, Backups,
Printing, Email, PC-NFS, Users, Crontabs, Automounting, System Modules, Modems,
Ongoing Maintenance, Tuning, Security, AWK, Perl and others in such detail that
it was purchased by several large organisations and used as the primary
reference for SunOS administration for two years. Tim O'Reilly requested that
when the manuscript was finished to send it to him for publication.
Unfortunately the pressure of work and the gradual acceptance of Solaris
stopped this. |

created the first Standard Operating Environment (SOE) for all Sun Microsystems
workstations across the corporation.
Designed and implemented security solutions at the site and machine level.
Established and trained users in the use of Internet email and news systems.
Maintained contact with other professionals on the Internet to advise managers on products
and developments in the system and mining/resources areas.
One of the major tasks performed was to produce documentation and guidelines such
as the following:
- Security on UNIX workstainstallation procedures
- Client/Server Installations. A guideline to a standard operating environment
- WMC Network Redesign A personal perspective
- Users and Accounts "Herding Cats". A workable system for managing users and their accounts
- A short tutorial on AWK
- Cron Jobs Creating crontab entries
- Networking Automounting in a minesite Client/Server environment
Many of these (and other documents) became the standards for documentation within
the mining/resource UNIX arena. |
