My Resume - Strengths and Weaknesses |
Strengths
- Speed
- I have been described by my peers as the fastest programmer they have seen. I tend
to code on the fly and produce good, generic code that is easily modified and documented.
I also type and create documents quickly and easily. This resume took around 10 hours to
write from scratch.
- Conceptualisation
- I have a good ability to understand and explain difficult concepts very quickly. I can
pick up a new product or language in a matter of days and become proficient very quickly.
One IS manager has described how I could walk into a new situation and be able to reach
correct conclusions and provided fixes for issues that would normally have required extensive
knowledge of the product.
- Memory
- In my many roles I have been required to remember and be able to call up obscure notes,
bug patches and information from many years past. When I was working at Sadleir Computer
Research I wrote the original version of the code which was 1 million lines of code. I was
able to identify problem areas very rapidly by simply looking at the screen display. I have
been dubbed "The walking encyclopaedia".
- Empathy
- I get on very well with every level of staff. At WordRight Technologies I was required to
be able to discuss issues with machinists, secretaries, accountants and directors with equal ease.
I have been told that I can condense difficult concepts to suit the client.
- Persistence
- I do not like to "not understand". This does not mean that I drop important tasks
to spend an inordinate amount of time on a trivial issue, but rather that if I find I can't answer
a question, I will tend to spend as much available time (including personal) attempting to find the
answer. One customer said "If Kim ever said 'I give up', I would faint".
- Honesty
- In dealings with customers I will never directly lie. If something is broken, I will say so.
This does not mean bluntness. I am very diplomatic and never, under any circumstances make derogatary
remarks about the client, products, sales-people or staff to anyone, including other clients, sales-people
or staff.
Weaknesses
- Doing too much
- I tend to pile on the work until I am working 15 to 16 hours a day. I have a real problem with
scheduling and tend to keep my "schedule" in my head and fluid.
- Not saying no
- What can I say. I am learning, but it's still hard to say "no" to a customer with a problem.
- Authority
- If I can see a valid reason for doing something, I tend to work my way towards it regardless of
the opposition. I never confront or cause arguments though.
- Impatience
- Although it may seem arrogant and I don't mean it to be, I tend to get frustrated when other
programmers or administrators are unable to do things as fast as I can. I tend to then do my part
and run off to do something else.
