My love of the Star Trek Universe and everything in it started back when the very first episode of the original series aired for the very fisty time. I know, I know you're thinking "Ryan you weren't even born yet! You silly man." Well you'd be right but I am a third generation Star Trek fan. My grandfather loves Star Trek, my Father loves Star Trek, and I love Star Trek. My cousin loves Star Trek, my siblings love Star Trek. Its become genetic, I had no choice and I wouldn't want one. Like being gay and brilliant its just who I am. I am a Trekker. If you don't like it well too bad!
People ask me "Ryan, you're an intelligent and mature fellow. Why do you like this Science Fiction drivle about a bunch of people in tight uniforms running around in space expereincing outlandish events and being nice to weird looking people, unless they're blowing them up? And to them I say that its because Star Trek speaks of a future for humanity that (other than killing only from necessity) we are a benevilant and king race. Star Trek says that we can learn more than we'd ever imagined and that we can use this knowledge for good and peace. Its message is that we as a people can make peace in our world instead of blowing it up. We have the intelligence to go out and blow up other worlds...kidding. Its is a dream that someday we will touch the stars and learn about the nature of the universe and ourselves. And once we get where we're going we'll be back where we started with a whole new understanding of where we are, making it new all over again.
Now of course everyone has there favorite Star Trek movie and series. Well lets talk about movies shall we. Now anyone that has seen all of the movies will agree that the even numbered ones where of course of the highest calibre. Pretty much they are the best of the movies. Number 2 "The Wrath of Kahn" was nothing but action and character development. Kirk got a passed and plots for future movies where secured by the genesis devise. Number 4 "The Journey Home" was an interesting experiment in temperal dinamics, aiding in the future plot twists of many a modern day episode. Not to mention mankind saving itself from extinction by saving a creature that they had made extinct. Number 6 "The Underescovered Country" wow that was a good show and it braught us the invention of the term "to be" in the Klingon language. It also brought peace with the klingon empire..well closer the Enterprise C had to be sacreficed to further that cause. And now number 8 la piece de resistance "First Contact." This movie is phenominal! Its got the best special effects ever, the most plot twists and keys into the characters and their feelings as people locked in a desperate struggle to save humanity by saving its passed from their most deadly enemy. Man is Data ever cool in this one.
The odd numbered ones are a bit ify on quality whoever. I don't know what it was. I mean number 1 "The Motion Picture" was long and drawn out with kind of annoying musical interludes. But its the first and a classic the plot developed the characters and got "Star Trek" back on its way to a cult following. Even the idea that something that we launched out into space could come back to us form millions of light years away ts so creative that the story is timeless. It was just poorly delivered. Number 3 "The Search For Spock" well it was a good movie if you were really upset that Spock dies in number 2. I was upset about it but not upset enough to kill Kirk's only son. Although if you watch this one enough times you might want to kill someone. Its great seeing Bones wollowing in confusion and pain while Spocks Katra tries to get out. But other than a few good jokes and a couple of good fight scenes I don't think that this movie would appeal to anyone exceot for us die-hard Trekkers. Number 5 "The Final Frontier" oy where do I start. They're trying to find God.... I don't know I think someone was on acid or something and wrote a good role for William Shatner. Well he always gets those. Number 7 "Generations" Hmmm. Not half bad the odd numbered ones might be getting better. Unfortunately the whole thing is special fx. I mean sure the "Star Trek" universe got a new temporal annomaly and a new use for trilithium but other thatn adding a malfunctioning emotion chip to Data's possotronic matrix not a lot was accomplished with this movie. Except for destroying NCC 1701-D from the Next Generation. I nearly wet myself in horror. My little Enterprise, for years I'd watched her travel the stars. Sure she's been blown up before but not for good.
I guess that the demise of the Delta did lead to the introduction of NCC 1701-E in "First Contact". Oh baby is this ship fine! And huge too. I love this ship grrrrrrr. That's just one of the reasons that number 8 is my favorite movie thus far.
Okay so number 9 came out and it really, in my opinion, is a good movies. "Insurrection" isn't as good as say "First Contact" but it is still what I would have to call the best of the odd numbered movies to date. I mean the special effects were good. The story line was fiarly realistic, although they should have gotten more into the science behind to plot. That would have brought it to the calliber of an even numbered one, I think. The biggest problem with this movie was that there were a lot of characters behaving out of character, for a reason, but they didn't go far enough into the reason for the plot to be as convincing as it could have been. And of course the emotional Data was a blast as usual. And my my my Jean-Luc's just getting lucky in all the movies now isn't he? I guess someone had to fill Kirk's shoes in the movies. Would hate for those interstellar std's to stop being spread. Thank goodness for Dr. Crusher's hypo-spry huh?
Don't get me wrong though, I would still rather watch an odd numbered Star Trek than most anyother movie. Unless I'd seen it recently.
There has been a long standing debate that I feel needs to be settled. Which series is the best. Rarely the original is braught up, but it has a classification all of its own. But often there will be people saying its "Voy" or "DS9" or even "TNG." Which one do I preferr you ask. Well I took care of the one before you even thought to ask. I don't need to prefer any of them because they are all equally as good. But many people insist and my answer is that I would rather destroy them than to decide which I like better. So here it is:
I was just thinking one day what would it be like to be in command of a ship that could do this? In one engagement the entire list of our favorite star ships wiped out. Kaboom!! How much power would that take? What kind of experience would you need to beat the combined knowledge of three star ship captains? Golly that would be a lot. but I wanted to see what it would look like so here it is. Pretty impressive, eh?
I thought of several different designs for a ship. I have this one in my mind right now. Sure it looks funny but its the closest thing I have to a finished product. Check it out:
This ship is equiped with multiphasic shields and weapons. It has the ability to phase out of normal space so as to elude attack. This same technology allows the ship to attack in a way for which there is no defense. The torpedoes used phase out of normal space until the moment of impact. Thus passing the shields and even part of the ship before it shifts back into normal space and explodes. The phasers work on the same principle the beam is set to a modulating phase shift. It randomly shifts frequencies out side of normal space passing right through the space where a shield normally would be. The out of phase modulation causes a sympathetic vibration in the subspace harmonics of the beam once it has matched the same frequency as the shields of the other ship. Then the beam is reintegrated into our space time continuem and slices through a hull like mashed potatoes.
The damage caused by this type of weapons system is quite extensive. Even a convetional phaser strength would be adequate to destroy any vesle that was attacked. Of course, "Star Fleet" enegineers being ever improving on old designs, they have revamped the system increase power to the phasers by challening power to them throught the warp plasma relays. Giving that extra boots of warp power. The phase effect on the beam is controled by the new and improved phaser emmitor grid. Each emmitor had been equiped with a quantum phase converter. The adjustment of each beam is controlled by an automated program within the main computer. This prgram can be directly accessed by the crew on the Bridge and in Main Engineering if need be. This allows for manual detection of shield hamonics and if a researcher wishes to investigate the sub-space distortions that appear to be the main side effect of this technology. There has also been a newly designed warp drive, designed especially with this system in mind.
Each photon and quantum torpedoe has been equiped with its own multiphasic shield emmitor and automated frequency detection sensor system. This allows the torpedoes to act as an additional source of information as to shield frequencies. Thus allowing the ship to phase back into normal space and penetrate the shields of an opponant's ship witht an immediate phaser blast. Of course with the new torpedoes a ship need never re-enter normal space during battle. They need only fire a torpedoe and set it to rephase and explode once it has reached the space occupied by the other ship's warp core or main propultion unit.
There is also a very long standing debate as to which captain is the best out of the four main captains. I say that there is no debate they are all the best. They rock my galaxy. They are all well versed in the physical properties of the universe, they all know what jobs to give to the right people and they just rock. Janeway however would get my vote in one area. That area being the never leave someone behind department. She has to be the most devoted captain out of all of them. I guess its because she feels like a mother to all of the crew. Since they're like a family. They've all eachother has so I guess that's why she's the gutsiest out of all four. Hell hath now fury like a pissed off female captain whose got to get her ship back to the alpha quadrant from 70,000 light years away. |
So anyway here they are:
