Audre Lorde is perhaps best known for her poetry. Her poetry collections include:
The First Cities
Cables To Rage
From a Land Where Other People Live
New York Head Shop and Museum
Coal
Between Our Selves
The Black Unicorn
Our Dead Behind Us
A Burst of Light
Undersong (a collection from previous works)
and others.
She also wrote Zami: a New Spelling of My Name which she describes as a biomythography - her life mythologized, and The Cancer Journals, which is a collection of her journal entries from her struggle with breast cancer.
In trying to describe her, the first word that comes to mind is strong. There is an undeniable force and character behind her every word.
Here's a poem from Undersong:
NOW
Woman power
is
Black power
is
human power
is
always feeling
my heart beats
as my eyes open
as my hands move
as my mouth speaks
I am
are you
Ready?
