Michele Writes: I was
an army ROTC geek for my entire high school career (Franklin High in Los
Angeles). While in the Navy, I volunteered for
Viet Nam,
but was in the wrong service; they just laughed at me. I transitioned on the
LAFD and in my Buddhist temple in 1991. I have been employed by the Los Angeles
Fire Department since 1969 to present. Currently I am a fire captain in charge
of Fire Station 41 in Hollywood, CA.
Janis Walworth and I were married in England in Dec. 1999 using their law, which
requires one male and one female birth certificate in order to obtain a marriage
license.
Janis and I founded the Center for Gender Sanity in 1997 to:
- educate folks, straight and queer, about the natural complexity of sex and
gender;
- deconstruct those dichotomies that separaate people and limit their thinking;
and
- to help transpeople transition on the jobb.
Janis Walworth is the
author of Transsexual Workers, An Employers Guide, and Working with a
Transsexual, A Guide for Coworkers. We host the annual Full Circle of Women
conferences on both the left and right coasts.
And we are hoping to move to Bellingham, Washington in the near future!
