Sarees come in a variety of materials and there are a number of links (some of which are given below) to learn about the various kinds of sarees. This page will concentrate more from the standpoint of the preparation required to buy and wear sarees.
If you are a regular crossdresser (which means you can easily transform yourself into the woman you want to be without much trouble / preparation except shaving your face), then I would suggest you go formally dressed (full sleeves shirt, necktie, polished leather shoes) to purchase a saree. There is an important reason for this formal dressing is to create an impression of prosperity and that you hold some important position in your organisation. Such important people are not suspected to be crossdressers. Most of the shopping that I have done has been after office hours when I am still formally dressed. The other advantage is that if your sleeves are rolled down and buttoned at the cuffs, your arms are unlikely to be noticed to clean of hair!
I have a few favourite pretences which I put on when I go to purchase a saree.
1) I am from out of town and want to purchase
a saree for my wife as I am returning to my home town.
2) I am from the same town but I am purchasing
a saree for my maid servant who is getting married in a week. (Effective
when you want a low priced saree.)
3) I am from the same town but I want to gift
a saree to my wife (Effective if you are purchasing a high priced saree.)
Caution: If you opt for the cheap sarees, then there is a likelihood that it will be only 5 yeards or even 4 and half yards length instead of the traditional 5 and half yard length.
The color and material I leave you to choose. But I give a few tips to those who are interested:
1) If you are fair skinned, bright colors such
as turquoise, mauve, green look good on you.
2) If you are lightly tanned, any color will
suit you, but go easy on the brightness of the colors.
3) If you are dark skinned, choose light pastel
shades for sarees.
If you plan to purchase readymade blouses, then there should be more colors in the saree print. The advantage is that the sales person will have a wider choice to choose from to match a blouse.
