Looking beyond the packagingAs we approach Christmas at the end of this millennium, I am caused to stop and wonder something. Why is it that when we receive a wrapped present from someone, we barely notice the paper, the ribbons, the bow? Because they are exactly that; packaging. We know that although the outside of this gift may be eye-appealing, the real essence of the gift is within all the wrapping. Now, stop and compare this with our interactions with people. Why is it that when we first meet someone, we start making all kinds of assumptions about them and their worth based on their physical appearance, their 'packaging'? Are they dressed in expensive clothes? Are they pretty or handsome by standards of perceived perfection that someone else decides? Do we see youth as their being new? Or are they considered damaged goods based on disability or weakness? Quite often, this does occur. I pause as I think of a very close friend of mine. He may be considered overweight by some. He isn't rich enough to dress in all the latest trendy clothes. A modelling agency might say that he isn't very handsome. And yet, underneath the packaging is the soul of a very beautiful, very precious man. It is my sincere wish that as we meet new people and greet old friends in this new millenium, that we take a closer look at them. See them for who and what they really are. They are gifts. You may or may not choose to admire their ribbons and bows. But, please take a closer look at what is inside of them.
