Butch/Femme Books

Persistent Desire: A Femme-Butch Reader
Joan Nestle (ed.)

This "bible" of femme/butch history and identity is an absolute required addition to your personal library. I will be writing an extensive review of this book in the near future - check back soon!

Out of the Closet & Nothing to Wear
Leaslea Newman

HUMOR!!! Cute (maybe too cute) romp with high femme Leslea Newman and her fictional adventures with her sweet butch husband, Flash. Leslea is not afraid to laugh at her own femme-y eccentricities. (Personal note: The first date seduction/butch training story was my personal guide to the blind date on which I met my TG butch husband, Del!) As with most good homor, there is truth behind the yuks... nicely written and entertaining; good for late night reading aloud.

Butch/Femme
M.J. Soars (ed.)

Teeny little photo compilation with two essays. Current and archival pics. A few really wonderful, sexy photographs. Equal time given to femmes, with several pics of femmes standing alone, in all their femme glory! Not too expensive, so it makes a good gift. (Here's an idea: Tuck it into a basket of pampering goodies --like bubble bath, etc.-- next time you need to buy a present for a femme friend!)

Butch-Femme: Inside Lesbian Gender
Sally R. Munt, Cherry Smith

Okay, I admit it... I haven't read this yet. Would anyone else like to send me a review?

Stone Butch Blues
Leslie Feinburg

A masterpiece. Full review coming soon. I have NEVER been so touched by a book in my life. Leslie Feinburg is one of the most eloquent voices of the transgender community. (Note: Leslie Feinberg is partnered with transensual femme poet, author and activist, Minnie Bruce Pratt.)

A Restricted Country

In Her I Am
Chrystos

The Lesbian Erotic Dance; Butch, Femme, Androgyny, and Other Rhythms
Joann Loulan

JoAnn is a self identified femme lesbian who is currently in a controversial long-term relationship with a bio man. In-ter-est-ing... Wonder how she would feel about the transensaul femme identity? More on that later. The book is a good read. It was one of the first things I read about butch/femme. Very heavily couched in lesbianism. I'll review it more extensively when I have a chance.
