U274 was built at Addington in 1897.
An example of the great work done with quite primitive construction equipment.
Designed in New Zealand, fully modern with Walschaerts valve gear several years
before this was in common use in Britain or the USA.
This photo however is some years later, after reboilering, by which time some of the classical
neat lines were being lost - an extra dome has been added (for sand),
chimney now a stovepipe type, Westinghouse pumps & tank added, with extra pipes, etc.
Note staff on lunch break soaking up the sunshine (left of smokebox). Loco was withdrawn in 1956.
