The X class were the biggest locos in New Zealand when built, No. 442 was built at Addington in 1909 as a four cylinder compound, but in 1943 was rebuilt as a four cylinder simple. A year later it was sold to the Ohai Railway Board for use on the coal railway. Thus it became the only X class to see South Island service, although not by the NZR.
