Major Benjamin Watkins Leigh
B.W. Leigh entered Confederate service in May, 1861 as Captain of Company A, 1st Virginia Battalion, He served as commander of the Battalion and the 42th VA Infantry for brief periods during 1862. In the spring of 1863, Leigh transferred to the staff of General Edward Johnson and was promoted to Major. At the Battle of Chancellorsville in June of 1863, Leigh was present at the wounding of "Stonewall " Jackson and helped carry the wounded General from the battlefield. Leigh was killed at Gettysbury on July 3, 1863 while trying to rally a group of Confederates on Culp's Hill. His body is belived to been buried by mistake in the National Cemetery at Gettysburg in an unmarked grave.
