E.M. Ross was born at "Bel Pre" in Culpeper County, Va. June 30, 1845. Graduate of V.M.I. Class of 1865. Drillmaster at Richmond in 1861 and assigned to Company C in June, 1861. Present with the Battalion durning the Valley Mountain Campaign through Cedar Run. Complimented by Gen.Stonewall Jackson for bravery. Returned to V.M.I. in 1862 and served with the Corps of Cadets at Battle of New Market in 1864. Recommended for appointment as 2nd Lt. with 52 Va. Infantry in 1864, but remained with the Cadets until the fall of Richmond in April, 1865. Post War. One of the founders of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity in September of 1865. Merchant's clerk in Richmond from 1865 to 1868. Moved to California in 1868. Studied law in Los Angeles. Lawyer:1869-1879.
Judge on Supreme Court of California 1879-1886. Lawyer: 1887-1895. Elected Circuit Judge, 9th Judicial Court of Southern Califorina, 1895. Died in Los Angeles, December 9, 1928.
