This page is dedicated to Sheepshead Bay and my memories of the time that I spent there. I was a mate on the Pilot II during my formidable years, 12 - 17 yrs old. I have many fond memories of the Bay. I have been back many times since I left the Bay for the Air Force in 1984 and it has sure changed a lot! Some changes weren't all that bad, but some had something to be desired. The City redid all of the Piers, which were in desperate need of repair. Then things started changing for the worse. Some of the fishing boats decided that they could make more money by becoming a floating dance club & reception hall, "Out of place" shopping center was built right across from the waterfornt. On a more positive note, Lundy's was finally restored and is now opened for business. The food is still great! Anyway, this page is about what I remember the Bay to be while I WAS THERE! I would love to here any input that you might have, suggestions and your experiences are welcome. If I get enough stories I will add a page to post them. In addition, if there is something that you would like to see, please don't hesitate to ask. I have lots of photos that I could not add, due to space restrictions. Thanks for visitin' - I would appreciate it of you would sign my guest book. Thanks One more thing - I have kept the number of photos to a page limited to speed things up a bit. Unless otherwise noted all photos were taken in the early 80's

*** Pilot II Pier 7 ***
The Pilot II was one of the most successful fishing boats in the bay. It was an unassuming 72' triple screw diesel that wasn't very fast at all. However, when you are captained by the best you don't need a super cruiser.
The Captain, and owner, pf the Pilot II is Capt Tom Marconi, pictured above. He is an excellent Captain, fisherman, and human being. I know this to be true because I worked for him for 5 years (1979 - 1984)
The Pilot II specialized in "wreck fishing" for Blackfish, Sea Bass and Porgies.

Avenger Pier 7
The Avenger, a.k.a the "Scavenger" was a good looking boat, approx 100', but it never amounted to in the fishing department. One time they caught, or snagged a lost Marlin. It was quite a site hanging from tree in from of the dock. The Avenger left the Bay sometime in the late 80's |
Brooklyn V Pier 6
The Brooklyn V was the fastest boat in the Bay during the 80's to 90's. It was about 90' feel long and they excelled at Bluefishing in the summertime. The Brooklyn V is now the Dorothy B VIII. I do not have a photo of the Brooklyn VI yet. |
Blue Sea III Pier 8
The Blue Sea III was, in my opinion, one of the cleanest boats in the Bay. As soon as the Blue Sea docked the mates would start cleaning it with a fury. The Blue Sea III was approx.85' and it eventually was sold and became the Pilot II. This beautiful boat burned at the pier by a suspicious fire. |
