For those of you who are first-time visitors, we are the Iowa Carp Anglers Association
(ICAA). Nine years ago, Pat McNally was taling with these guys from the CAA (Carp
Anglers Association). Interested, he decided to start his own chapter, and the Iowa Carp
Anglers Association was born. Since then, the ICAA has taken on its own mind and
direction.
After starting with only nine members in 1990, we now boast over sixty. And
we just keep getting bigger.
Most of us hail from a small town in Northeast Iowa, called Gilbertville. We also
have members spread across Northeast Iowa and some other parts of the state as well.
Lately, we have had some anglers from out of state joining us for some carp fishing also.
We are trying to get them into the organization and are making progress. We haven’t had
any international visitors yet, but we keep hoping.
Our “headquarters” is one of our hometown bars, The Dew Drop. That is where
we get together and make fun of bass and walleye anglers. That is also the place to
contact, besides this website, for information on the ICAA. Sorry, I cannot post the
phone number, but don’t worry, that is what telephone operators are for.
We are an organization based on absolutely NO RED TAPE. We have no
membership fees, no meetings, and no newsletters. If you want to become a member, it
is a simple process. Buy an ICAA t-shirt. That’s it. Some people balk at this approach.
To them I say, don’t join. We aren’t in the ICAA to pay money, have rules, or spread our
vast, infinite wisdom. We are in this for two reasons. First, fishing is fun. Sometimes
people seem to forget that. We don’t. Second, we are here to promote carp and end the
bad rap the fish has gotten over the years. With some anglers, that will take awhile, but
we aren’t giving up.
We promote and practice catch and release. Granted, not all of our fish get back
to the water. Some wind up mounted in the Dew Drop, others wind up in a smoker.
Some of you reading this might think carp taste bad. Well, you’re absolutely right. If
you don’t know what you are doing, that is. I don’t have personally have any recipes, but
I do know someone who does. I will see if I can talk her into putting a link onto our
page.
CARP FISHING IN IOWA
Before I start this, I want to say that in no way, am I an expert at fishing or telling
you where or when they are going to hit.
What I do have to say is that Iowa has carp.
Lots of carp. Most of the carp I have seen have averaged 5-10 lbs. I know there are some
spots out there that are hiding a lot bigger ones, but I have yet to hook into one.
Some
good spots here in Northeastern Iowa, that I have fished, include: the Cedar River,
Hickory Hills, Lake Delhi, and Eagle Lake. I have fished Sailorville Lake in Des Moines,
but I haven’t caught one there yet. If anyone would be interested in checking out these
spots with us sometime, just send me or Pat an email, and we will set up a time to do
some fishing.
If you know of any other spots here in Iowa, please email me (Kevin) and let me
know. I will be happy to post them up here.
FUTURE PLANS OF THE ICAA
Well, our ultimate goal is to get as many people involved with carp fishing as possible.
In the process, getting some well-deserved respect to the carp.
We do have some other plans going on as well. Somewhere down the road, the
annual Carp Classic will be an invitational tournament. We aren’t going to predict when,
but once enough teams enter the tournament, it will happen. If you are interested in
fishing the carp classic, you better get into it now!
Another route we are going soon, is to become a registered non-profit
organization. One of the only reasons we are doing this is to get sponsors onboard a little
easier. With the carp’s bad reputation, getting sponsors isn’t always that easy. If you are
interested in sponsoring a carp classic, send us an email.
Lastly, we are thinking about putting on a children’s tournament. This idea is still
being batted around. If anyone is interested, or has some advice to give, please let me or
Pat know.
