Unless visitors arrive in Brisbane by plane, they
could easily miss the adjacent 1000-square-kilometre body of sheltered
water called Moreton bay. Many people come to Brisbane for the bright lights
, the dining and entertainment. And yet, there is another dimension to Brisbane
that is only now being revealed. Even some residents of Brisbane
have not yet fully explored the richness the Bay and Islands
have to offer. And yet it is so close , and so accessible that those who
live and work on the Bay can"t believe the secret of their paradise has
not yet escaped further afield. Stretching for 125km along
the Queensland coast, most of Moreton Bay is a marine park and its
waters and tidal lands are protected while allowing for diverse recreational
use. This marine wonderland is home to 155 islands. It is an area full
of history both indigenous and Eurpean. In 1770 James Cook named
the expanse of water stretching from Point Lookout on North Stradbroke
Island to Cape Moreton on Morton`s Bay. He mistook the islands to be part
of the mainland. Acartographer's error on a map of the Bay later gave the
spelling as Moreton Bay- as it has remained. Moreton bay is one destination
that truly offers something for everyone. For those who enjoy water activities,
Moreton bay has plenty to offer sailing ,fishing, diving and snorkelling. On
land there are safaris, sand boarding ,for lovers of nature ,there are whale
and dolphins to spot and more than 50,000 wading birds visit the Bay annually
,and can be seen at key points along the bay.
For accommodation,Moreton Bay has diversity on offer. At various islands and communities along the mainland are places to stay ranging from camping caravan parks to motels and low-key resorts. There are plenty of ways to gain access to the Bay-on day tour boats transfer launches and vehicular ferries. When planing your holiday, make use of the staff and volunteers at the tourist associations located throughout the district. The main point to remember is to enjoy the natural wonders on offer in Moreton Bay,and when you get home tell your friends. |
