Common Name: Moonfish (Mene Maculata).
Toe Hoo (Knife Fish) in Hokkien or Kapak (Axe) in Malay.
Description: Silverbody, almost semi-circular. Silver bellywards and bluish with dark spots along the back. Almost flat, with filamentous pectoral fins.Grows to about the size of an adult's palm. Rarely, to about 20cm length.Said to be schooling fish found in the deep waters.
Tips: Not much is known of its eating habit and the fish has a small mouth, probably making it difficult to catch on line. Usually caught using troll nets by commercial fishermen. A felow fishing kaki from Malacca, however, said that it is possible to hook moonfish using pumpun (sea worms) on prawn hooks.
